Undoubtedly one of my favourite movies of the year, Pacific Rim is a Kaiju love letter that reignites the kid in me. I’m joined by my partner in the Drift, co-pilot Krystle of ClockTown, to take on these monumental beasts. Cast formula takes a bit of a change where we’re covering a movie for the first time. Come hear me gush like a child about giant monsters!

Regarding what you said about the category 5 kaiju, I got the impression that the fact that we never really saw its full body was meant to create tension in the scene. The Jaegers in that scene are underwater, out of their element (I forget if there was any mention of the Jaegers actually being designed for underwater combat), and that coupled with this huge, unknown enemy made the fight a lot more tense than when they’re fighting the other ones on land, or in a shallow bay area.
Although I think we’d probably both agree that it would have been nice to get a clear shot of the whole thing just so we could sit up and say “Damn, that’s a badass kaiju” haha.
Honestly, I think I was feeling my need to see more of the Category 5 during the rewatches. There was enough energy in the cinema that I think it fulfilled this purpose. A mysterious battle with mysterious invaders in the occluded world of the ocean’s abyssal zone. It works.
(Come to think of it, maybe it would have been brighter had the movie not been made for 3D, hhmmm)
But yeah, one real “villain pose while I roar real loud” shot would have been the ticket. 🙂
