DOOM 3 – Everybody’s Got A Little Light Under The Sun

DOOM 3 was a game I watched land at a distance. By the time it launched I had grown weary of FPS titles and the criticism from the fanbase sort of pushed it to the wayside for me. It was a game that polarized. DOOM 3 made many changes to the format established in its predecessors. DOOM’s previous installments and many clones forged certain expectation with this series. And DOOM 3 would catch flak for changes to the format, to enemy redesigns, to the deliberate focus on dark environments. But how much is warranted?

Revisiting DOOM – Knee Deep in the Past

The release of DOOM 2016 has rekindled the imagination and memories of many, many people. It’s hailed as contemporary yet a return to form. DOOM reached a lot of people’s computers, and it’s clear that it stuck. At present I don’t have a platform for the game, so I decided to reach out to the installment I had never played in any capacity – DOOM 3. And to frag three pinkies with one shell, I looked to the BFG Edition which also collected DOOM 1 and 2 on PS3. Not the ideal experience, but it worked and so I played these games for the first time in over 15 years.

I Ain’t Afraid Of No GhostBusters Video Games!

GhostBusters was pretty big when I was growing up, and I loved it. Loved the movies, loved The Real GhostBusters cartoon, loved the toys. Just like countless others, I was all for this series. That puts certain high expectations for any new media related to the franchise, especially when it purports to be canon to the original films. And 2009’s GhostBusters The Video Game has such a distinction.

Guacamelee! – Add Some Spicy Burrrrrn to Your Playstation 3!

Guacamelee! Is a game I’d been watching for a while, but didn’t jump on until I received a glowing recommendation from a buddy. It’s been touted as “Luchador Metroid” and that’s not entirely far from the truth. What Guacamelee! Does is blend elements into something entirely unique and fresh. Available on the PSN, it promises to become one of the platform’s standout games of the year.

Impressions – Tokyo Jungle

The jackal is approaching the end of its years. It was chased into these sewers ages ago and has finally claimed them for his own. And now he prowls, a vicious shadow felling the panthers of the sewer as if they were lambs. No resistance down here, except the Tigers. Mate in tow, he crawls through the muck looking to find a suitable place to pass on his legacy. He drops into a nest – it’s crawling with tigers! He barely makes it out alive, and makes a hasty retreat across the sewers to the one other place he remembers. It’s farther, but hopefully it’s safer. He makes it there while he barely has any virility left. His line is secured, for now.

Driven Precision – Spelunker HD

“HD Remakes” are becoming more and more common. I’ve already written about the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection but just as common are revamped games released through digital distribution channels. These are not always just new textures and reworked resolutions. Sometimes it is a complete remake, as is the case of Spelunker HD.

And while Spelunker HD is certainly a remake, it is still quite reverent of its source material and is unabashedly old school in its design and execution. A lot of games I talk about on this blog have a love/hate dichotomy. This is taken more towards the extreme with Spelunker HD which retains the infamous flavour of the original release.

3D Dot Game Heroes – Is Everything Old New Again?

The act of making a game that is “retro” by design, or that closely resembles its earliest predecessors is no new phenomenon. Perhaps the biggest poster child for this trend is Mega Man 9. Games that are designed to pull at nostalgic heart strings, they try to be fresh by channeling what was once tired. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. Another side of this coin is the rerelease or the collection. In my last blog post I talked about Shadow of the Colossus as I had picked up the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus Collection. A more drastic example would be the GameCube releases of Resident Evil and Twin Snakes. We could also call upon the sheer multitude of times Sonic the Hedgehog has been rereleased.

In all of these situations, the games rely largely on their respective legacy to create interest. Even titles that are retro by design are also designed to be evocative of a certain era or play style that will appeal to those of us who have been in the game for a long time. Nostalgia is a powerful motivator, but it is made better when these games are actually well done. Because truly enjoyable gameplay is timeless, and breaking the gaming generation boundaries doesn’t matter unless it’s done properly.

Shadow of the Colossus – Embracing the Journey

Admittedly, I am a fairly retrogressive dork when it comes to entertainment media. I’ve gone plenty of years without picking up a current home console and I wasn’t particularly arsed to change the situation. But times change, and I found myself really wanting a Playstation 3 for a myriad of reasons. The straw that would have broken the proverbial back if I hadn’t picked one up now would have certainly been The Last Guardian’s eventual (hopeful) release. It’s fitting then that that this would be the disc to first enter my new console…
