Sonic the Hedgehog helped define SEGA’s Genesis platform amongst their competition during what’s considered the fourth generation of home consoles – the 16-Bit era. Even among a  sea of attitude mascots, the first party offering was enduring. But SEGA would try to expand their platform several times and while these add-ons are often looked at contentious today they provide an interesting experiment in expanding a mainstream home video game console beyond its out of box offerings.

then it follows that the SEGA CD would have its own Sonic title to drive sales of the add-on and serve as an example of what it was capable of. Sonic CD has hallmarks of earliest games in the series but has its own flavour. The time travel and completion mechanics, the regional soundtracks, the backgrounds and atmosphere. It remains a unique entry in the classic set.

I’m joined by Kris to spin that Past signpost and travel back to confront the challenges found upon the Little Planet. Did Sonic CD make a good future?
